Biosabor generates positive social, environmental, and economic impacts both in Almeria and in Spain. We are a pioneering company in understanding sustainability transversally to make this a better world.

The work of BIOSABOR is aimed at supporting sustainable development in all three areas ECONOMIC, SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL. For us it has been crucial to align our strategy with sustainability, reflecting the “CREATION OF SHARED VALUE”, in our policies and practice.

In order to reflect the “creation of shared value”, we have developed “seven strategic lines based on our activity”. Our goals as an organization, relating to both BIOSABOR and its stakeholders, create a shared value between the organization and the environment through these seven strategic lines. We seek a mutually beneficial relationship with the environment which minimizes potentially negative impacts and enhances the positive impacts of our activity.

17 Sustainable Development Goals

At Biosabor we understand sustainability as a global aspect in which all the Stakeholders with whom we interact must be represented and listened to.

  1. Quality of our differentiated organic products for their taste, nutritional value and food quality.

  2. Model of sustainable agriculture.

  3. Management system extended to the value chain.

  4. Partnerships for the strengthening of the supply chain and the development of agriculture in the area.

  5. I+D+i: Research in nutrition, health and sustainability.

  6. The well-being of our workers.

  7. Development and involvement in the community.

Aware of the importance of being part of valuable initiatives to support sustainable development, in 2019 we joined the United Nations Global Compact and the Food Sustainability Network (RedSostal), promoted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food of the Government of Spain.

Member entities must comply with 10 Principles in the areas of human rights, labor standards, environment and anti-corruption measures, and annual reporting on these principles. In 2015, the 193 member states of the UN approved the “2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”,with the  17 Sustainable Development Goals – which are marking the way forward for global transformation.

How we contribute to the

Principles of the Global Compact

  1. Businesses should support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights within their sphere of influence. ver-mas

    We take care of the conditions of our facilities to ensure the safety and health of our workers. We regularly undergo the SMETA assessment, based on the ETI (Ethical Trade Initiative) Code, and an annual Risk Assessment of Social Practices (GRASP), based on ILO Conventions.

  2. Businesses should make sure that their companies are not complicit in human rights abuses. ver-mas

    We apply the management system we have developed and the SMETA and GRASP assessments to our supply chain (BioSabor partners). Our first Code of Ethics, which includes human rights aspects, will be implemented from 2020.

  3. Businesses should uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining. ver-mas

    With the GRASP assessment, compliance with ILO Conventions is checked, in particular: ILO Convention 87 on freedom of association and ILO Convention 98 on the right to organize and collective bargaining. This is also ensured by the SMETA audit. These commitments are included in our Social Responsibility Policy. There is currently one freely elected employee representative on the staff.

  4. Businesses should uphold the elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labor. ver-mas

    In our Social Responsibility Policy, we include compliance with ILO Conventions 29 and 105 on forced labor, which is verified in the GRASP and SMETA evaluations.

  5. Businesses should support the eradication of child labor. ver-mas

    We comply with ILO Conventions 138 and 182 on minimum age and child labor, as verified in the GRASP and SMETA evaluations.

  6. Businesses should uphold the abolition of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation practices. ver-mas

    We comply with ILO Conventions 111 on discrimination and 100 on equal pay, having integrated them into our Social Responsibility Policy.

    GRASP and SMETA assessments prove the non-existence of discrimination at BioSabor, where we have an almost equal proportion of men and women, and from origins as different as Spain, Latvia, Mali, Morocco, Romania, Argentina, etc.

    In addition, since 2016, we have been implementing our I Equal Opportunities Plan for Men and Women, consisting of specific measures in the areas of selection, recruitment, promotion, training, remuneration, work-life balance, occupational health, harassment, and communication and awareness.

  7. Companies should maintain a preventive approach that favors the environment. ver-mas

    We have an Environmental Management Plan 2019-2020, which specifies the areas in which we act and with which we must take special care due to the nature of our activity; in addition to a Waste Management System, included in our Quality Management System.

    We have been named “zero food waste company”, by AECOC, for the work we do reducing to the maximum and reusing the possible waste of our production. We use ecological production techniques that minimize the impact of agriculture on the environment.

  8. Companies should encourage initiatives that promote greater environmental responsibility. ver-mas

    We hold the GLOBALG.A.P., Organic Production and Bio Suisse certifications, which include requirements associated with environmental respect. In particular, by joining the GLOBALG.A.P. initiative, we encourage the adoption of Good Agricultural Practices.

  9. Businesses should encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies. ver-mas

    The handling building has an eco-efficient design, with a rainwater collection system, solar panels that allow self-consumption of 7% of the energy required by the plant, ventilated facade, insulating panel roof with false ceiling that also creates an air chamber that works much better thermally, multicellular polycarbonate skylights…

    The farms have been upgraded and 30% are of the multi-tunnel type; the ventilation of the structures is optimized and there is an irrigation system that minimizes the use of water.

  10. Businesses should work against corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery. ver-mas

    We have designed our first Criminal Compliance Management System and Code of Conduct, which will be applied from 2020, both in BioSabor and in all its stakeholders.
