BIOSABOR SAT

The 5.0 business model at BIOSABOR puts ethical-social values and sustainability at the center of the company. Together with digitalization and the use of technological tools, as well as our ethics and business values, this enables us to be a business reference within the sector.
The company currently travels a path towards a new paradigm, in accordance with new global demands in which the company is part of a social system where ethical values gain recognition, in which industry 5.0 models of cooperation prevail against individualism in the management of companies and businesses, where greed is replaced by solidarity and conflict by opportunity.
We are talking about a flexible business model that gives meaning and purpose to what we do, which is a space for not only professional but also personal growth, where people enjoy their work of co-creation, generating value for the whole. This for us is BIOSABOR, a company 5.0.

Solar Greenhouses

Almeria’s “solar” greenhouses do not need to use fossil fuels. They work mainly with the heat of the sun, so they are more efficient and sustainable than those of other producing areas, where growing in winter requires heating. Thanks to greenhouses, in this part of the Spanish territory it is possible to grow fruits and vegetables and supply them to European markets during the harshest and coldest months of winter in a continuous and environmentally sustainable way. During the winter, greenhouses in the province of Almeria are the only ones in Europe at full capacity. Thanks to them, all European citizens can consume fruits and vegetables of the highest quality in the coldest months of the year. Biosabor has more than 310 hectares of its own production, with the latest technology necessary for organic farming where chemicals cannot be used, and of which around 30% are multi-tunnel structures.

In these multi-tunnels we use the latest technology to maintain strict control of climatic conditions, including the mechanization and automation of overhead and lateral ventilation (35% of the overhead ventilation surface). The tightness of these structures are tightly sealed to facilitate the control of humidity and temperature inside the greenhouse, which allows us to keep the plants in their optimal environment. In these farms we grow the most demanding and sensitive varieties that have higher added value due to the difficulty in their breeding and the superior flavors they provide.

Another of the types of greenhouses we have are called RASPA-AMAGADO, with high roofs and the precise means to achieve maximum seal, so as to better control of the indoor climate. They have between 6% and 12% of the surface ventilated overhead, which is an important advance since traditionally greenhouse structures have only had between 3% and 5% of the surface ventilated.

we have automated irrigation systems in all greenhouses, which permits a constant monitoring of soil conditions. We work hard to make a very responsible use of water, providing only the volume that the crop needs. Currently we have almost completely eliminated leachate and we cultivate with around 30-40% less water consumption than in previous years.

From the beginning we have taken into account the location of our farms, taking advantage of each microclimate in southeastern Spain to benefit for different crops and times of the year. Preferring more isolated areas whenever possible, the company has farms in the municipalities of Níjar, La Cañada, Retamar, plus Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, the coast of Murcia, and the Ladera de Sierra Nevada.

In all our production units we have installed a double chamber every year,to protect crops even more from the condensations of the roofs, and in the warehouses providing us with more thermicity while reducing the ambient humidity. It helps a lot to reduce the proliferation of fungal diseases.

More than 5 years of field trials have confirmed our theories and led us to the best type of plastic film for these temporary greenhouse covers, which we originally used only in the winter months, and which today we keep on through the middle of the campaign for the benefits they offer.

In summer we grow outdoors with anti-insect mesh in isolated areas of Sierra Alhamilla and SierraNevada, from 600 to 1000 meters of altitude; taking advantage of the thermal jump from day to night which is so beneficial for crops and which at lower altitudes does not exist. Either outdoors or protected only with anti-insect meshes, we grow the same vegetables during the season when high temperatures limit cultivation in the greenhouse areas.

In all the farms there are houses for fieldworkers. Families living in them have more time to do household chores and take care of their families, as they avoid travel times. At the same time they feel they are part of the production unit. For the rest of the workers who live outside there are rest areas, dining rooms and services with showers included. With all these comforts, the work teams feel involved and committed to the company, and every day the efficiency of cultivation operations is improved.

Since the beginning we have been a company with values committed to society, health and the environment; in all our activities we contribute our grain of sand to making the world a better place.

Sorting and packaging centre

The sorting and packaging center was inaugurated in 2015. Located on a plot of 104,213 m2 and with a total constructed area of 14,800.45 m2, there is a Handling center 1 main warehouse of 9,535, 55 m2 and an office building of 1,186.20 m2. The Handling center 2 has supply, storage and the watermelon handling area of 4,042.80 m2. We also have a Canteen that serves members and employees. We have made an investment of more than 11 million euros in these facilities as well as in the machinery lines that incorporate the latest technology. They are facilities designed with care and a lot of love, both by the technicians and by the president, plus all those personnel and companies who contributed all their extensive knowledge and during construction.

The well-being of our workers

The well-being of workers is the main objective of our company, and therefore these facilities have focused on making workers comfortable by offering the best possible working conditions: thermal, health and lighting. Making the most of natural light and creating a friendly and comfortable workspace, workers themselves feel more comfortable and that ultimately favors their moods and performance. Being a company of organic products, mainly tomato, many of our processes cannot be automated, so we have a team of more than 300 workers at our headquarters.

Energy Efficiency

In line with our ecological philosophy, we intend that these facilities are in accordance with our respect for natural resources, a building designed to be as sustainable and efficient as possible. We emphasized and studied in depth the different construction solutions in the envelope of the warehouse, opting in the end for ventilated façade solutions, plus insulating panel covering with false ceiling to create an air chamber that works much better thermally along with multi-cell polycarbonate skylights, etc.

Hygienic and Sanitary Interior Finish

When handling food, we consider it essential to take care of the interior finish. A pristine atmosphere was sought, free of visible installations and loose elements to avoid the accumulation of dirt and dust, with totally smooth walls and a pore sealant treatment in the screed to prevent dirt from embedding.
